Block Paving Maintenance: Keeping Your Driveway Looking Its Best

Block paving is one of the most durable driveway surfaces you can choose, but like anything outside it needs occasional attention to stay looking its best. The good news is that the maintenance is straightforward if you keep on top of it. Ignore it for several years and you will face more work to bring it back. Here is a practical guide to keeping your block paving in good shape.

The simplest and most effective thing you can do is keep the surface clear of leaf litter and organic debris. Leaves left to sit and rot on block paving create a layer of damp, decomposing material that encourages moss, algae, and weed growth in the joints. A stiff brush or leaf blower every couple of weeks during autumn, and a monthly once-over the rest of the year, makes a significant difference.

Weeds growing through block paving joints are one of the most common maintenance complaints. They are not growing through solid material. They are establishing themselves in the joint sand, usually from windblown seeds landing on a damp surface. Kiln-dried sand joints are quite resistant when they are intact and well-compacted, but over time the sand can wash or blow out, leaving gaps that make ideal weed habitat.

For occasional weeds, a good weed killer applied directly works well. For persistent or widespread growth it is usually a sign that the joints need re-sanding. Pull the weeds, treat any remaining roots, and brush fresh kiln-dried sand into the joints. Re-compact with a plate compactor if you have one, or tamp down firmly by hand. After that, the joints are tight again and much harder for new seeds to establish in.

North-facing driveways and areas with heavy shade from trees or buildings are most prone to moss and algae growth. The blocks themselves do not deteriorate from moss, but a green surface is slippery in wet weather and looks neglected. A proprietary patio cleaner or diluted bleach solution applied with a stiff brush and left to work will clear most growth. Rinse thoroughly afterwards.

If you use a pressure washer, keep the setting low. A high-pressure jet will blast the joint sand out and loosen block bedding, which creates more problems than it solves. A gentle fan setting on a standard consumer washer is fine. Industrial-grade jets should be avoided entirely on block paving.

Every few years, a block paving driveway benefits from being re-sanded. The joints gradually lose sand through rain, traffic, and weathering, and refilling them prevents weed growth, keeps the blocks locked tightly together, and extends the life of the whole surface. This is a job you can do yourself with a bag of kiln-dried sand from a builder’s merchant, or we can include it as part of a maintenance visit.

Sealing block paving is optional but worth considering if you want to maintain the colour and protect the surface from oil stains and weathering. A good quality sealer also makes the joints harder for weeds to penetrate and slows down the growth of moss and algae. The surface should be clean and dry before sealing, and the product needs to be applied properly to avoid an uneven or tacky finish. We recommend leaving sealing to a professional if you have not done it before.

One of the practical benefits of block paving is that individual blocks can be lifted and relevelled if they sink or become unstable. If you notice a section of your driveway that feels soft underfoot, or a block that rocks when you stand on it, it usually means the bedding sand beneath has shifted or the sub-base has settled. The repair involves lifting the affected blocks, addressing whatever caused the movement, relaying on fresh bedding sand, and reinstating the surface. Because each block comes out individually, the repair area can be kept small and the rest of the driveway is left undisturbed.
