Resin bound driveway installation in Thornbury by Smart Paving Bristol

How Long Does a New Driveway Take? From First Call to Finished Surface

One of the most common questions we get asked is how long a new driveway will take from first contact through to completed job. The honest answer is that it depends on several factors, but most residential driveway projects follow a fairly predictable sequence. This guide walks through that process step by step so you know what to expect.

When you contact us we will arrange a free site visit at a time that suits you. On the day, one of our team will come out to measure up, assess the ground conditions, look at existing drainage, and talk through your options. We bring samples so you can see different materials and patterns before you commit to anything.

After the visit we put together a written quote. Depending on how busy we are, you will usually have that within a couple of days. We do not do vague ballpark estimates over the phone. Every quote is detailed and written down so there are no surprises.

Once you accept the quote, we book the job into our schedule. Lead times vary with the season. Spring and summer tend to be busier, so lead times can run to a few weeks during peak periods. In autumn and winter we are often able to start sooner. We will give you a realistic start date when we book the job in and we keep you updated if anything changes.

The first day on site is usually ground preparation. This involves breaking out and removing the existing surface if there is one, excavating to the correct depth, and setting up edging restraints. The excavation depth depends on what the surface is going to be used for. A driveway that takes vehicle traffic needs a deeper, more robust sub-base than a pedestrian patio.

This is often the noisiest part of the job. We try to get as much of the breakout work done early in the day and we will always let you know the night before if we are bringing machinery.

Once excavated, a well-graded stone sub-base is laid and compacted in layers using a plate compactor. This is one of the most important parts of the whole job. A driveway is only as good as what is underneath it, and skimping on sub-base depth or compaction is the most common reason driveways fail early. We do not cut corners here.

For resin bound driveways, a bound macadam base course is also required before the resin layer goes down. That base needs time to cure before we can proceed.

Block paving is laid by hand, one block at a time, to the agreed pattern. For a standard single driveway this typically takes one to two days once the preparation is complete. Imprinted concrete is poured, stamped, and coloured in a single process and then needs at least 24 to 48 hours to cure before the surface can be walked on. Resin bound is mixed on site and trowelled to a consistent depth, curing overnight.

Block paving finishes with kiln-dried sand brushed into the joints and the whole surface compacted again to lock everything in. Final edging, any drainage gullies, and cleanup follow. We tidy up thoroughly before we leave and take all waste with us.

For a standard single or double residential driveway, the installation itself usually takes two to four days on site. Larger projects with extensive groundwork, drainage changes, or complex patterns will take longer. We will give you a clear timeline when we quote the job so you know what to plan around.
