Common questions
How long until I can drive on it?
24 hours after the wearing course is laid. The tarmac needs to cool and set before vehicle traffic. We always commit to a clear hand-over time at the start of the job.
Will tarmac soften in summer heat?
Modern tarmac is formulated to handle UK temperatures comfortably, including the warmer summers we now get in Bristol. We use highway-grade binder that doesn't soften under direct sun the way old tarmac driveways used to.
How long does a tarmac driveway last?
20+ years for a residential drive, often 30 or more. The wearing course can be over-laid with a fresh top-up after 15-20 years, which extends the life almost indefinitely. We've over-laid drives we originally laid in the 1990s.
Will weeds grow through it?
Not through the surface. Tarmac is a continuous bound layer with nothing for roots to grow up through. Weeds occasionally establish at the edges; a yearly weedkiller treatment handles them.
Can I have a coloured edge or border?
Yes, we often pair tarmac with a block paving border for a more decorative finish. The block edge gives the driveway definition; the tarmac fills the centre with a smooth, hard-wearing surface.
