Groundworks is everything below the finished surface: the excavation, the geotextile membrane, the Type 1 MOT sub-base, the edge restraints, the soakaways and the drainage. It's the part nobody sees once the driveway or patio goes down, and it's the part that decides whether the finished job lasts 5 years or 25.

Common questions
Do you do groundworks for other trades?
Yes, regularly. We do groundworks-only jobs for builders, landscapers and other Bristol trades, either as a stand-alone package or as part of a wider build. Same survey-and-quote process as a residential job.
How deep does the sub-base need to be?
For a residential driveway, 150mm of compacted Type 1 MOT minimum, often 200mm where the existing ground is soft. For pedestrian patios, 100mm is usually enough. We calculate this site-by-site rather than working to a one-size-fits-all spec.
Can you arrange a dropped kerb application?
Yes. We handle the full Bristol City Council application, the fees, the traffic management and the licensed installation. It typically takes 6 to 8 weeks from application to install.
What is a SuDS build-up?
SuDS stands for Sustainable Drainage System. In practice it means a build-up that drains on-site rather than letting water run off into the road. We use open-graded sub-bases, geotextile separation and permeable surfaces (permeable block, resin bound) to keep front gardens within permitted development.
Will my driveway need a soakaway?
Depends on the site. If your front garden has porous soil and good clearance, a simple soakaway will do. On clay soils or tight sites we'll often spec an ACO channel feeding the existing surface water drain. We test the ground at the survey.
