What is resin bound
The smoothest, most modern driveway finish in Bristol.
Resin bound is dried natural aggregate, mixed by hand with a clear two-part polyurethane resin and trowelled onto a prepared base. The finished surface is smooth, fully permeable, and free of pattern joints. Water drains straight through it, which means it sits inside permitted development for Bristol front gardens.
We lay resin bound onto either a fresh, open-graded tarmac base or, on the right site, directly over existing sound concrete. The base does the structural work; the resin and aggregate do the wearing. A typical Bristol driveway takes 3 to 4 days.

Resin bound is unforgiving. Get the base wrong and the surface tells on you. We get the prep right, then trowel by hand to leave a flat, even finish.

Overlay or replace the existing base?
An overlay needs a suitable existing base, sound edges, appropriate levels and a water route. Replacement may be needed where cracking, movement or drainage cannot be resolved within the proposed system. Ask the quote to explain the base assessment and preparation included.

FAQ
Common questions
Is resin bound the same as resin bonded?
No, and the difference matters. Resin bound is what we install: aggregate and resin mixed together, then trowelled flat. The surface is smooth and permeable. Resin bonded is a thin scattering of stone glued on top of an existing surface. It's quicker to lay, but loose stones come away and it isn't permeable. We don't install resin bonded.
Will it crack in winter?
Properly mixed and laid, no. The resin we use stays flexible at low temperatures and the surface is permeable, so there's no standing water to freeze and expand. The base underneath is what causes most cracking. Get that right and the resin bound on top is stable for the long term.
How long does it take to install?
A typical Bristol driveway of 40-60m² takes 3 to 4 working days if we're overlaying a sound base, or 5 to 7 days if a fresh tarmac base needs laying first. The resin itself goes down on the final day; everything before that is preparation.
Can I lay it over my existing concrete or tarmac driveway?
Sometimes, and only after a proper inspection. The existing surface needs to be sound, level and free of major cracks. Tarmac is the easier overlay; concrete needs careful priming. If the base isn't suitable we'll tell you up front rather than risk a failure six months in.
Will the colour fade in the Bristol weather?
Modern UV-stable resins hold their colour well. Older resin systems used to yellow within a few years, but the systems we use today are formulated specifically against UV breakdown. Expect your driveway to look the same in ten years as it does on day one.
