A resin bound wearing course may let water pass through, but that does not settle every drainage question. The base below it, the ground, the driveway's slope and incoming runoff all influence the design. A channel can therefore be a considered part of some installations rather than evidence that resin bound is pointless.
Follow water through every layer
Ask what happens after rain enters the decorative surface. A permeable base and an appropriately designed lower construction can manage water differently from a retained dense slab. The phrase “porous top” is not a description of the whole route.
If the base is impermeable, the design needs to account for water at the surface and within the construction. Do not assume that a channel visible at one edge automatically resolves water held elsewhere. The detail should follow the selected system and site assessment.
Consider the water arriving from outside
A garage roof, neighbouring land or an adjoining dense path can add runoff. The driveway needs to be assessed as part of its surroundings. A surface designed for its own rainfall may not be intended to receive every additional flow directed towards it.
Levels near the house and public boundary deserve particular attention. Rainwater should follow the intended route rather than collect at a doorway or discharge unintentionally onto the pavement. A channel needs a suitable destination, not just a neat grille.
Avoid all-or-nothing claims
Some resin bound projects can form fully permeable systems; others require additional drainage arrangements. The correct explanation is site-specific. Planning suitability also depends on the applicable rules and property circumstances.
At handover, ask how drains and edges should be maintained. Leaves and sediment can affect visible drainage features even where the decorative surface remains sound.
Question to ask: Is this channel managing runoff from the driveway, a retained dense base or another area—and where does the collected water go?
