Buyer's Advice

What base does a resin bound driveway need?

The aggregate blend is the visible part of a resin bound driveway, but the base determines much of its support and drainage.

Stone sub-base laid and levelled

The aggregate blend is the visible part of a resin bound driveway, but the base determines much of its support and drainage. There is no single build-up that suits every property. The specification should reflect the ground, vehicle use, available levels and the chosen surfacing system.

Start below the decorative layer

The underlying ground needs assessment, particularly where old fill, service trenches or soft areas are present. A consistent-looking top cannot compensate for uneven support below it. Describe the intended vehicles and any tight turning movements before the construction is designed.

A specified base may use a suitable asphalt construction or a proprietary system approved for the application. Resin Mill also describes its own Bound Base PRO approach. These are choices within designed systems, not interchangeable layers to combine without checking compatibility.

Decide how rainwater is managed

For a permeable driveway, the decorative layer, base and lower construction need to work together. Storage capacity, ground infiltration and any required outlet are separate considerations. A porous surface is only one part of that arrangement.

A dense retained base creates a different situation and requires a deliberate water route. Be wary of any explanation that stops at “the resin lets water through” without describing what happens below it. That missing detail affects both performance and planning considerations.

Ask for an understandable specification

You should be able to identify the retained or new layers, the selected wearing course and the details at edges and drains. Depths and materials should follow the design and product requirements rather than a universal internet diagram.

Keep the specification with the aftercare information. It helps distinguish a maintenance issue from a base or drainage problem later, and makes future alterations easier to assess.

Good sign: The installer can explain why the proposed build-up suits your site. Reason to ask more: The entire explanation consists of a colour name and a promise that the surface is permeable.
