Buyer's Advice

A patio and lawn that meet neatly: choosing the edge detail

The junction between paving and lawn affects appearance, mowing and drainage. Practical advice for Bristol homeowners.

Slab patio and lawn behind a brick house

The junction between paving and lawn affects appearance, mowing and drainage. A tidy edge should contain the materials without creating an awkward lip or a narrow strip that is difficult to maintain. Agree the detail when the patio levels are being planned.

Decide how the lawn will be maintained

Think about the mower and the route used to reach the grass. A practical edge can make trimming easier, while a raised decorative kerb may require more hand finishing. Neither approach is automatically right for every garden.

Mark any curve at full size and view it from the house. Smooth, deliberate lines are easier to read than small bends added around leftover spaces. Keep enough usable lawn or planting width for the area to remain manageable.

Keep soil and paving separate

Soil spilling onto the patio creates dirt and can support unwanted growth. The edge should contain the adjacent ground appropriately. Where the patio is higher or lower than the lawn, the level difference needs a suitable detail rather than being hidden by loose soil.

Avoid directing runoff into an area without checking that it can receive and manage it. A lawn is not an unlimited drainage destination, especially where ground infiltration is poor or the water would collect near the house.

Coordinate appearance with function

A matching edge can make the patio feel quiet; a contrasting course can define it more strongly. On a small garden, one clear edge may provide enough detail without additional internal bands. Consider how the joint lines meet the perimeter.

At handover, check that the border is supported and that mowing or walking across the junction will not disturb it. Keep planting and soil from gradually covering the paving edge later.

Useful question: How will this boundary look, drain and be maintained after several seasons of mowing and gardening? A durable-looking completion photograph answers only the first of those questions.
