Buyer's Advice

Large patio slabs or smaller units: choosing a useful scale

Large paving units can give a garden a calm appearance, but bigger is not automatically better. Practical advice for Bristol homeowners.

Grey slab patio in a walled garden

Large paving units can give a garden a calm appearance, but bigger is not automatically better. Smaller units can handle awkward shapes and changes of direction differently. The right scale is the one that works with the actual patio outline, joints and daily use.

Look at the cuts, not just the middle

A large slab may look excellent in the central field yet leave narrow strips beside a wall or step. Draw the proposed layout with the actual unit sizes and joints included. A small change in the starting point can improve the whole perimeter.

Smaller units create more joint lines, which may feel busy or give the garden a useful rhythm. Compare both options on the same outline rather than against unrelated photographs of different gardens.

Include furniture and routes

Mark the dining table, chairs and main walking line. A patio should still work when furniture is in use, not only when it is empty. Think about reaching the lawn, shed and side gate without squeezing past a chair.

Scale affects visual balance too. A compact courtyard can suit large units if the setting-out is resolved, while a broad garden may benefit from a more detailed arrangement. Avoid rigid rules based only on the size of the garden.

Keep installation requirements separate

Unit size does not tell you whether the product is suitable for the application. The material, support, bonding, joints and handling requirements all matter. A large patio slab should not be assumed suitable for vehicle loading without the appropriate product and system.

Ask for samples of the actual finish and a layout showing the edge cuts. Those two items reveal more than a catalogue photograph on its own.

A useful comparison: Count the main joints and inspect the smallest perimeter pieces in each option. Choose a scale that gives the patio a coherent field and sensible edges.
