A tree beside a driveway can influence levels, construction and future movement. Roots should not be treated as an obstruction to remove casually during excavation. Tree protection, ownership and the tree's condition need checking before work affects the root area.
Check protection and ownership
Tree Preservation Orders and conservation-area controls can restrict work, including root cutting. Bristol provides information for checking protected trees. A tree may also belong to a neighbour or the highway authority, creating further reasons not to assume consent.
Do not rely on the absence of a visible notice or a contractor's general familiarity with the street. Establish the position for the actual tree and proposed work. Seek the appropriate arboricultural and authority advice where needed.
Design around the finding
Changing the driveway level, excavating a conventional base or compacting material near roots can affect the tree. A specialist design may be required, or the layout may need to change. “Permeable” does not automatically mean a construction is harmless to roots.
If the existing surface has lifted, understand the cause before flattening it. Removing visible roots may damage the tree without providing a dependable long-term driveway solution. The right response should consider both the tree and the hardstanding.
Make the construction limits clear
Agree any protection measures and working restrictions before machinery arrives. Storage, vehicle movements and soil changes can matter as well as direct excavation. Ensure everybody working on the project knows the agreed approach.
Keep specialist advice, permissions and drawings with the project records. If unexpected roots are found, stop the affected operation and seek advice rather than improvising around them.
Before choosing the final outline: Identify nearby trees and check whether the work enters their relevant protection area. A well-planned driveway should address that relationship at the design stage, not after roots have already been cut.
