Buyer's Advice

Why imprinted concrete can look patchy after sealing

A patchy appearance after sealing can have several explanations, including differences in moisture, preparation, application or the condition of an older.

A patchy appearance after sealing can have several explanations, including differences in moisture, preparation, application or the condition of an older coating. It should not be diagnosed from one wet photograph. The first step is to preserve information about what was used and how the appearance developed.

Record the treatment history

Note the product, date, weather and preparation if known. Photograph the surface in consistent light, including an overview and close-ups. Explain whether the patches appeared immediately or changed as the area dried.

An older driveway may have received several products over time. That history can affect the assessment. If you do not know what was applied previously, make that clear before another treatment is proposed.

Avoid adding another coat immediately

More sealer may not solve the cause and can complicate the finish. Do not apply an unrelated product simply because it promises a richer colour. The correct response depends on the coating system and what is happening beneath or within it.

Likewise, strong cleaners or solvents should not be trialled casually across the driveway. Ask the supplier or a competent specialist to assess compatibility and an appropriate test method. A small controlled investigation is different from treating the entire surface by guesswork.

Separate colour variation from coating problems

The base colour, antiquing, printed texture and light all influence the appearance of imprinted concrete. Some variation may be part of the decorative finish. That does not mean every new cloudy or uneven area should be dismissed as normal.

Compare dated photographs and describe any change in texture, softness or material loss separately. These observations help determine whether the concern is mainly visual or requires further investigation.

Best next step: Contact the installer with the product details and clear dry-surface photographs. Wait for a diagnosis before cleaning aggressively, resealing or attempting to strip the finish yourself.
