The lines stamped into imprinted concrete create the decorative pattern. They are not automatically the joints needed to manage shrinkage. A driveway can look like separate slabs while remaining a concrete construction that needs deliberately planned crack-control details.
Decorative grooves and contraction joints do different jobs
A contraction joint creates a planned location for shrinkage movement. Its position, timing and formation matter. PICS explains that joints reduce the risk of random cracking, but do not provide an absolute guarantee against it.
That distinction should be discussed before the concrete is placed. If a design conversation covers only pattern and colour, ask where the functional joints will go. They are part of the finished appearance as well as the construction.
How the plan affects what you see
Corners, narrow connections and changes in the outline influence joint planning. Where practical, the layout may follow an existing pattern line, but appearance cannot be the only consideration. Trying to hide every joint can leave the construction less coherent.
Ask to see the proposed lines on a drawing of the actual driveway. Include covers, steps and the garage frontage. A joint placed around these features should be explained as part of the design, not presented later as an unexpected mark.
What should happen at handover?
Know which lines are intentional and how they should be maintained. If a new line appears elsewhere, record its position and any change rather than immediately covering it with a filler. An inspection can distinguish a superficial appearance concern from movement that deserves attention.
Do not use a generic online spacing rule as the complete construction design. The installer needs to follow the relevant system guidance and account for the slab geometry and site conditions.
Ask this before installation: Which lines are decorative impressions, which are functional joints, and how will both be incorporated into the final layout? A clear answer avoids unrealistic expectations about a completely uninterrupted concrete surface.
