Buyer's Advice

Why patio slabs rock—and why fresh pointing may not solve it

A patio slab that moves underfoot needs more than a cosmetic response. Practical advice for Bristol homeowners.

Slab patio with a curved lawn edge

A patio slab that moves underfoot needs more than a cosmetic response. The joint may be damaged because the unit is moving, rather than the unit moving only because the joint looks untidy. Establish the support beneath it before simply filling the visible gap again.

Observe the affected area

Note whether one slab moves or several do. Does the problem follow a path, sit beside a step or coincide with standing water? Photograph the area and any broken jointing. Avoid repeatedly levering or testing a loose unit in a way that could worsen the defect.

A local problem might relate to bedding or a particular edge. Wider movement may involve the underlying construction. The correct diagnosis depends on inspection, not just the size of the gap around the slab.

Understand what pointing can do

Jointing material has a role within its specified system. It should not be relied on to hold an inadequately supported unit in place. New pointing around a rocking slab can crack again because the movement remains.

A suitable repair may require lifting the affected unit, investigating the support and relaying it using the appropriate method. Porcelain, natural stone and concrete paving can have different bedding and bonding requirements. Identify the product before proposing a repair.

Inspect drainage and surrounding details

Persistent wetness or washout may contribute to the problem and deserves attention. So do unsupported edges and changes in level. Repairing the top without addressing an ongoing cause may lead to the same symptom returning.

After repair, follow the relevant protection and return-to-use instructions. Keep a record of the products used, particularly if the jointing needs to match an existing patio.

Quick answer: Fresh pointing can finish a suitable repair, but it is not a substitute for restoring sound support. Ask why the slab is moving before deciding how to make the joints look tidy again.
