Autumn maintenance is mainly about keeping ordinary access and drainage features clear. Leaves can collect in sheltered corners, carry dirt into joints and obstruct visible grilles. A short routine is more useful than waiting until a wet surface becomes difficult to walk across.
Start with the walking line
Clear the route from the gate or parked car to the front door. Pay attention to steps, changes in level and places that remain shaded. Wet leaves can disguise an edge or a local defect even where the main surface is sound.
Use suitable tools that do not damage the finish. Avoid scraping a sealed surface aggressively or dislodging jointing material while removing debris. Follow the installed product's aftercare advice for any cleaning beyond sweeping.
Check the visible drainage features
Remove accessible loose leaves from channel grilles and collection points where it is safe to do so. Know how the particular system should be maintained, and do not open unfamiliar covers or work inside drains. Repeated backing-up needs investigation rather than endless surface clearing.
On permeable paving, keep soil and fine material from being stored or washed across the surface. A pile of garden compost or building sand can create a problem quite different from normal seasonal leaves.
Notice changes while the surface is wet
Rain can reveal a new low point or a route of water that was not obvious in summer. Photograph recurring puddles and note whether they coincide with moving blocks, a blocked channel or runoff from another area.
Do not automatically apply a stronger cleaner or another sealer before understanding the finding. The right response depends on whether the issue is contamination, maintenance or construction.
A manageable habit: Combine sweeping with a brief inspection of steps, covers and drainage after leaf fall. Small observations made regularly help you identify changes before they become a more inconvenient problem.
