One advantage of block paving is that individual units can often be lifted. A small area of damaged blocks does not automatically mean the entire driveway must be replaced. The important question is whether the damage is confined to the units or reflects a problem underneath them.
Check what has actually failed
A chipped block beside a stable border may be a straightforward replacement. Several broken blocks in a dipping wheel track require a closer look at support and loading. Staining creates another distinction: a discoloured but sound unit might be cleaned or replaced without structural work.
Take an overview photograph and a close-up. Note whether the surrounding paving moves, whether water sits in the area and whether a vehicle regularly crosses the same edge. These details help an installer plan more than a cosmetic swap.
Matching is about more than colour
Replacement units need compatible dimensions, thickness, shape and installation requirements. A block from a different range can look similar in a photograph yet sit incorrectly in the surface. Identify the original product if records or spare blocks are available.
A perfect visual match may be difficult after years of weathering. Blending replacements across a slightly larger area can be less conspicuous than placing a bright new rectangle in the centre. Discuss the likely appearance before the repair begins.
Keep the surface working as a system
The repair should restore the bedding and jointing appropriate to the existing paving. On permeable construction, use the specified aggregate rather than ordinary sand. Around covers or edging, check that the neighbouring restraint remains sound.
Keep spare matching blocks after a new installation in a safe, identifiable place. A small labelled reserve can be useful if utilities are accessed later. It also avoids relying entirely on a discontinued product being available years afterwards.
Before booking: Explain whether the problem is cracking, chipping, staining or movement. The same number of affected blocks can lead to very different repair work.
