Cracks beneath a resin driveway: why the old base matters

A decorative resin bound layer does not make an unstable base stable. Practical advice for Bristol homeowners.

Resin bound driveway in front of a period house

A decorative resin bound layer does not make an unstable base stable. Existing cracks and movement need assessment before an overlay is proposed. Otherwise, the new surface may reflect a problem that was already present underneath it.

Record the existing condition

Photograph cracks, broken edges, depressions and previous repairs before they are covered. Note whether the cracks have changed and whether water collects nearby. The pattern of damage can help an installer identify what requires further investigation.

A fine surface mark and a moving structural crack are not the same finding. Avoid diagnosing either from a distant photograph alone. The base material, its support and the cause of the movement affect what can reasonably be retained.

Ask what the proposed treatment achieves

Some systems include products for particular crack or movement details. Their use needs to follow the relevant specification and does not justify a general promise that any old surface can be covered successfully. Ask about both the capability and the limitations of the proposed method.

If a joint in the existing structure needs to remain functional, covering it indiscriminately may be inappropriate. The new design should explain how such details will be carried through or otherwise addressed.

Decide whether retention is worthwhile

A sound base with a clearly defined local repair is a different proposition from widespread cracking and ongoing settlement. Removal may be the more appropriate route where the underlying construction cannot provide reliable support.

Keep the assessment and any repairs recorded alongside the final surface specification. If a defect appears later, that information helps separate an installation issue, a retained-base problem and ordinary surface wear.

Before agreeing to an overlay: Ask what caused the cracks, whether the cause has stopped and what evidence supports retaining the base. Colour and texture should be selected after those questions have been resolved.
