Resin bound paths for pushchairs and wheeled access: what to check

A continuous resin bound path can offer a different experience from loose gravel, but the finish alone does not determine whether a route is easy to use.

Long resin bound driveway leading to a garage

A continuous resin bound path can offer a different experience from loose gravel, but the finish alone does not determine whether a route is easy to use. Width, gradient, thresholds, drainage and turning space need to be considered together. Discuss the people and equipment using the path before choosing its appearance.

Begin with the whole journey

Follow the route from the gate or parking position to the door. Identify tight corners, abrupt level changes and places where a bin or vehicle could block access. A smooth central section offers little benefit if the final doorway remains awkward.

For mobility equipment, consider the actual dimensions and handling needs involved. A path that suits a compact pushchair may not suit every wheelchair or mobility scooter. Where accessible design requirements apply, obtain an appropriate design rather than treating a material choice as compliance.

Inspect the surface and transitions

A sample helps you feel the aggregate texture, but it cannot reproduce the slope of the finished path. Ask about the selected system's suitability for the application. Junctions with covers, drains and doorways should avoid unnecessary lips or abrupt changes.

The base needs to provide reliable support. A level finish on the day of installation is not enough if an inadequately prepared area later settles. Plan drainage so that the preferred walking line is not the place where water repeatedly collects.

Plan ongoing care

Leaves, soil and biological growth can make many surfaces less pleasant to use. Keep the route clear and follow the supplier's cleaning guidance. Ensure planted borders do not gradually narrow the path or spill debris across it.

If an access need is central to the project, make it an explicit part of the brief and check the completed route against it. Good design should be understandable through everyday use.

Useful test: Walk or wheel the proposed route before work starts, including opening the gate and reaching the door.
