Buyer's Advice

White patches on new block paving: is it fading or efflorescence?

White or pale patches on new concrete blocks can be alarming when the colour looked richer on the sample.

White or pale patches on new concrete blocks can be alarming when the colour looked richer on the sample. One possible explanation is efflorescence: mineral deposits carried to the surface as moisture moves through the concrete. It should be identified before any strong cleaning treatment is attempted.

Do not judge only from a wet photograph

Look at the paving dry and after rain, and photograph the same area over time. Note whether the lightening is powdery, patchy or associated with another material nearby. Mortar residue, a spill and surface damage can resemble a colour problem without sharing the same cause.

The supplier's aftercare team can help identify likely efflorescence from clear photographs and product details. Keep the block name, colour, installation date and any cleaning history available. These are more helpful than describing every pale mark as fading.

Why strong cleaning is a poor first response

Acid-based products can change the appearance of some paving. A treatment suitable for one stain or material may be unsuitable for another. Do not test an aggressive cleaner in the most visible part of the drive, and do not mix cleaning chemicals.

Natural weathering may reduce efflorescence. The appropriate response depends on the manufacturer and the condition of the paving, so avoid promises that every patch will disappear within an exact number of weeks. Patience and a correct diagnosis can be better than repeated intervention.

Think carefully before sealing

A sealer should not be used to hide unexplained marks or applied before the surface meets the product's preparation requirements. Moisture and deposits beneath a coating can complicate the appearance further. Establish the cause and resolve any underlying issue first.

For a new Bristol driveway, keep dated photographs through several changes in weather. If there is also flaking, soft material or ongoing deterioration, request an assessment rather than assuming that every issue is harmless efflorescence.

Useful distinction: A temporary surface deposit and actual loss of material are different observations. Describe both accurately when seeking advice.
