Block paving does not automatically need a sealer to function. Some homeowners like the appearance or stain resistance a compatible product may offer, but the decision should start with the block manufacturer's advice. Sealing is a separate treatment, not proof that the driveway has been properly installed.
Be clear about the intended benefit
Are you trying to deepen the colour, reduce absorption of spills or change the finish? Different products behave differently. A wet-look result may be attractive on a sample yet look too glossy across a broad frontage. Ask to see a test area before treating the whole drive.
A sealer does not stop the sub-base moving, repair failed edges or remove the need to clear leaves. It should not be described as a permanent cure for weeds. Seeds and dirt can still collect on the surface, including beside walls and planting.
Preparation matters
Existing deposits, stains and moisture need assessment before coating. The paving and joints must meet the sealer's preparation requirements. Applying a product over unresolved efflorescence or damp material can produce a disappointing finish that is harder to correct than an untreated surface.
Check compatibility with previous treatments. If the driveway was sealed years ago, establish what was used before adding another product. A patchy old coating deserves diagnosis rather than an automatic fresh layer.
Treat permeable paving differently
A permeable driveway relies on open drainage paths through its specified joints and construction. Do not apply an ordinary paving sealer without confirmation that it is suitable for that system. Protecting appearance must not compromise the way rainwater is managed.
For many homeowners, suitable cleaning and correct joint maintenance are the sensible first steps. Decide about sealing afterwards, with realistic expectations about appearance, preparation and future care.
Quick answer: Sealing can be an optional, product-specific choice. It should follow manufacturer guidance and never be used to conceal a construction or drainage defect.
