Buyer's Advice

45° or 90° herringbone: which way should driveway blocks run?

Herringbone can run diagonally across a driveway or square to its boundary. Practical advice for Bristol homeowners.

Grey herringbone block paving with a channel drain

Herringbone can run diagonally across a driveway or square to its boundary. Both arrangements create the familiar interlocking zigzag; the choice changes the setting-out and appearance more than the basic identity of the pattern. For a Bristol frontage, start with the shape of the parking area rather than choosing from a tiny pattern thumbnail.

What changes at the edge?

At 45°, the zigzag travels diagonally towards the border. It can soften a long, narrow approach, but usually creates more angled cuts. At 90°, the pattern has a stronger relationship with a straight frontage or garage. Neither arrangement makes a poorly supported edge acceptable: the border must restrain the paved area.

A pattern should be drawn across the whole driveway, including the entrance and any narrowing beside the house. An attractive central panel can still finish awkwardly around a drain cover. Agree the setting-out before the main field is laid, when small adjustments remain straightforward.

Think about how the space is used

Cars turning in a small parking area place different demands on the paving from people walking along a garden path. Confirm that the selected blocks, laying pattern and construction suit vehicle use. Block shape matters too: not every mixed-size range can reproduce the same herringbone arrangement as a standard rectangular unit.

For a curved frontage, ask to see how the straight pattern will meet the curve. Keep the main field consistent and let a carefully cut border resolve the change in direction. Forcing the field to follow every bend can make the layout look unsettled.

Decide from a full layout

Compare both orientations on the same outline, with the same border width and block colour. Include the front door, garage and drainage positions. If the difference is hard to judge, prioritise clean junctions and a practical entrance over a complicated pattern. A clear setting-out drawing is more useful than declaring one orientation universally best.

Question to ask: Where will the smallest cuts fall, and can the pattern be shifted to avoid awkward slivers?
