Buyer's Advice

Does resin bound surfacing need a sealer or topcoat?

A resin bound driveway should not receive an extra coating simply because an unrelated paving product is described as suitable for driveways.

A resin bound driveway should not receive an extra coating simply because an unrelated paving product is described as suitable for driveways. Any sealer or topcoat must be compatible with the actual resin system and its intended performance. Start with the original supplier's advice.

Identify the reason for treatment

Are you addressing wear, cleaning difficulty, aggregate loss or a change in appearance? Those are different issues. A coating should not become a substitute for diagnosing an unstable base, failed edge or contamination problem.

Find the resin and blend details before discussing products. If the installation history is unknown, say so. Guessing that every resin surface uses the same binder can lead to unsuitable treatment and disappointing results.

Protect the drainage arrangement

Where resin bound surfacing forms part of a permeable construction, the open structure matters. A treatment must not be assumed suitable merely because it makes the finish look richer or shinier. Confirm its intended use and effect within the installed system.

Appearance can change too. A coating may alter sheen or colour, which is particularly noticeable across a large uninterrupted area. Use an approved test area where appropriate rather than judging solely from a product photograph.

Distinguish maintenance from repair

Routine sweeping and suitable cleaning may be all that is needed for a sound surface. Loose material, soft spots or persistent cracking deserve an assessment before anything is applied. Covering them can hide information without restoring performance.

Keep a record of any treatment, including product name, date and preparation. That history helps future maintenance decisions and avoids layering incompatible materials over time.

Quick answer: Only use a sealer or topcoat when the surface supplier confirms it is appropriate for the specific system and problem. An extra coating is not automatically an upgrade.
