New paving changes the ground relationship around a building. Raising the surface to create a tidier appearance can affect ventilation, moisture protection and thresholds. These details should be checked before the finished level is agreed, especially where a driveway or path runs closely beside the house.
Identify the existing building details
Point out air bricks, damp-proofing features, door thresholds, downpipes and services. Some may be partly concealed by old paving or soil. Their condition and required clearance need assessment rather than being guessed from the height of the current surface.
An older property may have different construction from a recent extension. Do not assume one detail can be repeated indiscriminately around the entire building. Where the building arrangement is unclear, obtain appropriate professional advice.
Choose levels for function as well as appearance
A visually flush route may need a carefully designed threshold and drainage arrangement. Simply bringing paving up to the door can create a moisture problem. Equally, leaving an awkward lip without discussion may undermine access needs.
The proposal should explain how these concerns are resolved together. Keep drainage channels accessible and ensure the surrounding falls do not direct water towards a vulnerable building detail.
Inspect changes during the work
Excavation can reveal issues not visible during the first visit. Agree how unexpected findings will be communicated before they are covered. A small pause for assessment is preferable to building an attractive finish around an unresolved detail.
At handover, check the relevant ventilation and access points remain clear. Keep planting, mulch and stored materials from later covering them. The surface may be correctly installed and still become obstructed through subsequent gardening.
Before confirming the levels: Ask how the new paving respects this building's ventilation and moisture-protection details. A generic photograph of a patio beside another house does not answer that site-specific question.
