A driveway project affects more than the surface being replaced. Parking, household access and deliveries need temporary arrangements while work is under way. Agree those details before the old drive is removed, especially where it is the only practical route to the house or garage.
Make a household access plan
Identify who needs to enter and leave each day and whether anyone has mobility requirements. Include children, pets and regular visitors. Agree a protected pedestrian route where one can be provided and understand when access may change between stages.
Move vehicles out before the entrance closes. Check whether a garage contains items you will need during the project. An otherwise manageable programme becomes inconvenient if essential equipment is trapped behind a protected area.
Coordinate deliveries and collections
Tell the installer about parcel deliveries, bin day and any other planned trades. Material deliveries and waste removal may need a clear working area. Do not assume an accessible-looking surface is open for a delivery vehicle.
Keep the public pavement and neighbouring access in the discussion. Any permissions or special arrangements for the highway need their own checks; a private project does not automatically authorise storage or obstruction outside the boundary.
Allow for the stages that need protection
Groundwork, laying, jointing and curing have different requirements depending on the material. Weather or unexpected ground can alter the sequence. Ask for updates at sensible decision points rather than relying on one original completion date regardless of conditions.
At the end, obtain clear instructions for walking and vehicle use. Different parts of the project may reopen at different times, and a surface that looks finished may still need protection.
Before the start date: Write down the parking arrangement, pedestrian route, delivery instructions and contact person. A short practical plan makes the installation easier to manage without interfering with the quality of the work.
