Buyer's Advice

Your new driveway handover checklist: records, access and aftercare

A driveway handover should leave you knowing what has been installed and how to use and maintain it. Practical advice for Bristol homeowners.

Block-paved driveway with a curved contrasting border

A driveway handover should leave you knowing what has been installed and how to use and maintain it. The surface may look straightforward, but records of products, drainage and care will be valuable later. Use the final walk-round to resolve practical questions while the work is fresh.

Confirm the return-to-use instructions

Ask when pedestrians and vehicles can use each area and whether any early-use precautions remain. Keep barriers in place until the relevant surface is released. Make sure household members, deliveries and other trades receive the same instructions.

Walk the normal route to the door and check gates, covers, steps and transitions. Identify anything that needs clarification before assuming the handover is complete.

Keep a record of the construction

Useful information includes the surface product, colour or blend, jointing material and any sealer. Retain an understandable description of the supporting construction and drainage route. Photographs taken before layers were covered can add context.

Know which inspection points remain accessible and how to use any appropriate lifting equipment safely. Identify channel outlets and routine cleaning points without opening unfamiliar assets during the walk-round.

Get system-specific aftercare

Conventional block paving, permeable paving, resin, concrete and asphalt need different care. Ask which products and methods are suitable and which should be avoided. Keep the relevant supplier information with the project notes.

Confirm the actual workmanship terms supplied for your installation and the process for reporting a concern. Do not rely on an assumed product guarantee covering every part of the work. Keep dated photographs and contact details together.

Agree the remaining items clearly

If a detail is outstanding, write down what it is and the next step. A shared note is more useful than an informal memory of the final conversation.

The aim: Leave the handover with a usable surface, clear instructions and a record that someone else could understand later. A good completion photograph is welcome, but the practical information is what supports confident everyday use.
