Resin bound and resin bonded: two different surfaces explained

Resin bound and resin bonded sound similar, but they describe different ways of combining resin and stone.

Resin bound and resin bonded sound similar, but they describe different ways of combining resin and stone. That difference affects the texture, appearance and drainage. If you are comparing proposals for a Bristol driveway, make sure the wording identifies the actual system.

How the stone is held

With resin bound surfacing, aggregate and resin are mixed before the material is laid and trowelled. The finished surface contains small voids between the coated stones. Resin bonded surfacing uses a different process: aggregate is scattered onto a resin layer, creating a dressed surface rather than the same through-mixed construction.

From a distance, photographs can make the two appear more similar than they feel underfoot. Look at physical examples and ask which method is being proposed. The phrase “resin driveway” alone leaves an important question unanswered.

Do not assume the same drainage

A resin bound wearing course can form part of a permeable construction, but the layers beneath it still matter. A porous top over a dense base does not make water disappear into the ground. Resin bonded surfacing should not be presented as equivalent to a fully permeable resin bound system.

Discuss the destination of rainwater before choosing the decorative blend. The complete design may involve infiltration, storage or a controlled drainage route, depending on the site. Planning suitability cannot be decided from the surface name alone.

Compare like with like

Ask for the product, aggregate blend, intended use, base construction and edge detail. If one proposal describes a trowelled mixed surface and another describes broadcast stone, they are not two versions of an identical finish.

Consider access and care too. The texture you prefer for a decorative path may differ from your priorities for parking or wheeled access. A sample lets you judge these differences more reliably than a supplier's colour thumbnail.

Useful question: Is this a mixed resin bound surface or a resin bonded dressing, and how does the complete construction manage rainwater?
