A weed appearing between driveway blocks does not automatically mean plants have grown through from the original ground. Seeds can arrive from above and germinate in accumulated debris. Understanding where growth is occurring helps you choose maintenance that addresses the problem rather than repeatedly treating the wrong place.
Start with the surface environment
Leaves, soil and dust collect near hedges, garage doors and sheltered corners. These places can support growth even when the driveway was built correctly. A border that spills soil across the paving creates another source of material in the joints.
Sweep before debris forms a persistent layer. Keep planted areas contained and remove larger weeds carefully, without levering blocks loose. On a permeable driveway, preventing soil and fine material washing into the joints also supports the drainage arrangement.
Check the joints and edges
A depleted joint is easier for debris to occupy. The appropriate replacement material depends on the paving system: dry jointing sand and permeable joint aggregate are not interchangeable. Identify what is required before topping anything up.
If the joint keeps opening, or blocks move when the weed is removed, the issue may extend beyond routine growth. A spreading border or local settlement needs inspection. Repeated treatment of vegetation will not stabilise the surrounding paving.
Choose treatment carefully
Do not assume every weed-control product is suitable for every surface or drainage system. Check the label and the paving manufacturer's instructions, and protect neighbouring plants and water routes. Avoid casually applying chemicals where the intended runoff destination is unknown.
No outdoor driveway deserves an absolute weed-free promise. A useful aftercare plan explains how to limit debris, maintain the correct joints and respond to growth early. It should also distinguish a few seedlings from structural movement or damaged paving.
A helpful habit: Inspect the shaded edge when sweeping the main parking area. Small, frequent attention there is often more useful than waiting until the entire perimeter is overgrown.
